Healthy Road Trip Snacks

If your family is putting rubber to the road this summer, you’ll no doubt want to grab some snacks. We’ve compiled a list of healthy foods that are both kid- and travel-friendly.

Whether you’re a planner, a convenience store pit stopper or a fast food fanatic, having the right snacks on hand can make the miles melt away.

Plan Ahead Snacks

If you’re looking for easy-to-make, easy-to-pack snacks, try:

  • Chocolate Protein Bites (Get the recipe, opens new tab.)
  • Almonds (high protein, good fat)
  • Apples with peanut butter
  • Baby carrots
  • Baked apples with cinnamon
  • Cheese sticks
  • Coconut chips
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Freeze-dried berries
  • No-bake chocolate peanut butter oatmeal cookies
  • Pita with hummus
  • Squeezable fruit or veggies purees
  • Squeezable yogurt (try freezing them for a fun twist)
  • Unprocessed granola

Go-With-the-Flow Snacks

If you prefer to grab snacks at a gas station along the way, pick up:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Fresh fruit, if available
  • Frozen juice pops
  • Fruit-filled cookies, graham crackers and vanilla wafers
  • Squeezable yogurt
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Whole-wheat crackers

Fast Food Meals

Maybe you prefer a quick sit-down meal. In that case:

  • Go with a baked potato.
  • Order healthy sides like apple slices or yogurt.
  • Pick turkey bacon or Canadian bacon (lean meats)
  • Select a salad.
  • Skip the extra carbs like the double serving of bread in a club sandwich.
  • Skip the fries or share them.

Of course, you’ll need drinks, too. Avoid soda, which is bad for your teeth and gut. Your best option is water, but tea, milk and juice (in moderation) are also smart choices.

Happy Trails!
