Dr. Hellman has been a leader and innovator in the practice of diabetes care and also in the areas of patient safety and performance measurement both locally and internationally. Throughout his 50-plus years in medicine, he has emphasized a patient-centered approach, utilizing a team to support the physician to achieve the best results for the patient. He has helped advance medical knowledge through service with national and international organizations and publications. His practice has been located on the North Kansas City Hospital campus since 1993, providing both inpatient and outpatient care.

Professional Memberships

Dr. Hellman is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He is vice chair of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement, the nation’s premier physician-led organization regarding quality of care measurement and improving outcomes. He is past president of the Metropolitan Medical Society of Greater Kansas City and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, an AMA-convened consortium on quality and safety.

Honors, Awards, etc.

Dr. Hellman has received many prestigious awards throughout the years, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and the inaugural Innovation Award from the Kansas City Medical Society in 2015.

He received the Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in 2016. He received special recognition by the Kansas City Chapter of the American Diabetes Association in 2007. He was named a “Best Doctor in America” in 2010 and a “Kansas City Top Doctor” in 2000 by Ingram’s Magazine. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Chicago Medical School.

He was named a Distinguished Reviewer for Diabetes Care, a journal of the American Diabetes Association that is considered to be the leading clinical diabetes journal in the world. He was also asked to join the editorial board of Diabetes Care. In addition reviewing medical manuscripts, Dr. Hellman has been a prolific author of medical articles and book chapters in the diabetes literature. 

He has written many articles on glycemic control in hospitals, including a chapter in Managing Diabetes and Hyperglycemia in the Hospital Setting: A Clinician’s Guide, published by the American Diabetes Association in 2016, and two guidelines for insulin use in the hospital. He was on the writing committee for the Institute for Safe Medical Practices 2017 Guidelines for Optimizing Safe Subcutaneous Insulin Use in Adults.
